Inscription. To the “mountaineers”, or people who lived around the Pisgah Forest, these lands were theirs to log, pasture, hunt and moonshine as they had for years. In an effort to convince them otherwise, Schenck installed rangers in lodges at fourteen strategic locations throughout the forest and paid them $50 a month to protect the forest from “thievery”.

(sidebar)
Dr. Schenck had these distinctive lodges, often referred to as Black Forest Lodges, built imitating the architecture used in the Black Forest of Germany. Local men, Judson Meece, Ulysses Reeves, Webb Orr, and John Watts, built the lodges with chestnut beams and tulip poplar siding. Similar post and beam construction can be seen at the Single Men's Building in Old Salem, NC.
