Inscription. During Federal military occupation of South Carolina 1865-1877, this square was part of the parade ground used by United States troops. The barracks were located on this and adjacent squares.
 
Erected 1938 by The Columbia Sesquicentennial Commission of 1936. (Marker Number 40-2.)
