1. Fort Misidentified
The fort on Vernon ave. was miss marked in 1924 as a British Fort (Card's Redoubt) which is about 825 feet to the North. The Vernon Ave. fort was built in 1780 by the RI Militia and the French under Rochambeau for the St. Onge regiment. Ref. Newport History, No 161 Winter 1976 Vol49. 6. Green End Fort
The redoubt built by the British in 1777 is seen here near the northwest corner of Green End Pond. It was at the eastern end of British defensive lines around Newport, and was attacked by American forces during the August 29, 1778 Battle of Rhode Island.
