The cost of the monument was reported to be $6000 and was spearheaded by the Uzal Dodd Post (Orange, NJ) of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was dedicated on Memorial Day May 30, 1899.
The monument is on the eastern end of Military Common, which once was a larger parcel of land that served as a location for training exercises dating back to the War of 1812.
