Official USAAF Report via Find A Grave:
"About 1214 hours near 5200N-1253E, A/C 953 flying #1 position, High Squadron, 390th Group, dropped out the formation with #3 engine afire, left aileron and wing damaged after attack by enemy A/C. #953 Began to fall behind the formation under control. Last seen falling further behind under control near 51.34N 12.59E (approximately 20 Miles NW of Leipzig). No chutes were seen.
The pilot Carl D. Nesbitt, Bombardier Melvin B. Meyer, Navigator Wayne Dyer, and Engineer Lyle Larson had been declared dead. All other crew members bailed, two were wounded slightly, but all captured and interned. Captors investigated the burned wreck thoroughly.
Carl Nesbitt graduated from Central High school in 1939. He had finished his junior year at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio when he enlisted. He was employed at the Kolter-Buckeye Dairy Co. before he was appointed an aviation cadet. He trained at San Antonio, Texas, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Coffeyville, Kansas, and received his wings in August 1943."
