Inscription. Invented in 1898 one of the first successful automatic cigarette machines. Workshop was 3 blocks east.

The marker says, "Workshop was 3 blocks east." In the essay on the NC Markers page (link included on this page) it states, "In 1892, Briggs moved to Winston, becoming an inventor for the J. A. Vance Machine Shops." This image is taken from an 1895 Sanborn Insurance Map and shows the location of the Vance/Briggs workshop 3 blocks of the marker.
