USAAF Warsaw Uprising Support Memorial
This monument honors 1220 American airmen who, on 18 September 1944, air-dropped food and military supplies over Warsaw to help the Polish Home Army during the Warsaw Uprising (1 August - 2 October 1944). One hundred and seven B-17 Flying Fortresses from the 8th Air Force, escorted by one hundred and fifty P-51 Mustangs, flew from England over the Baltic Sea to Warsaw. One B-17 and two P-51s were shot down and a number of American airmen lost their lives. This mission was the only combat action in Poland undertaken by American forces in World War II.
