Inscription. Elizabeth Blackwell, a pioneer of modern, preventative medicine and the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree, graduated at the top of her class from the Medical Institute of Geneva College in 1849. Three years later, in 1852 Geneva College was renamed Hobart Free College and later Hobart College.
