Inscription. Site of the Yreka Gas Works which on Dec. 17, 1859 first lighted Yreka Streets. The gas was made by burning pine pitch.

another was granted to the Yreka Gas Works, consisting of A. Pierce, D.E. Knight, and C.E. Burrows. Works were at once constructed where they still remain, and on Saturday, the seventeenth of December 1859, the streets of Yreka were illuminated with gas."
