The "Why Burnside Bridge?" interpretive marker stands in front of the monuments for the 21st and 35th Massachusetts Infantry.

6. 21st Massachusetts Position Near the Bridge
The 21st Massachusetts advanced to a position at the base of the Burnside Bridge during the pile up of units attempting to force the crossing. From along the fence line, the regiment supported the later crossing by the "Two 51sts." According to the Battlefield Board maps, the 21st was generally positioned from the base of the bridge to the southwest, facing Antietam Creek and the Confederates on the opposite side.
