to Pocahontas Bridge
April 25, 1781


Here was fought the opening engagement of the decisive campaign of the revolution. 1000 American militia under Steuben, Muhlenberg, Dick and House opposed 2500 British under Phillips, Arnold and Abercrombie.

Blandford Church was present at the time of the Battle of Petersburg. The monument is on the other side of the brick wall seen on the right.

3. Gen. Phillips' Grave
British Maj. Gen. William Phillips, who died May 13, 1781, is buried in the churchyard of Blandford Church, just east of the monument.
