This memorial is dedicated to the life of Adrian Joss '98
Born in Woodland, WI April 12, 1880. "Addie" was a fine pitcher, and an admirer of Emerson "Pink" Hawley (Class of 1891), when he enrolled in Wayland Academy in 1897. Joss was coached by English instructor and ardent baseball fan Edwin P. Brown (Class of 1890), and pitched the team to a "brilliant season" in 1898. Addie played his entire major league career in Cleveland (AL), making his debut on April 26, 1902. Joss died of tubercular meningitis on April 14, 1911. He was so admired by his peers that they played the first "All-Star" game that July, to benefit Joss's widow and children. His career featured: four consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins, 2 no-hitters, and a 1.89 career ERA. Addie Joss was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1951, and into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
