Inscription. This eighteenth century building was erected to collect tolls from those passing through the western entrance to the estates of the bishops of London
 
Erected by the Heath & Hampstead Society.

Note the Spaniards Inn at right, directly opposite the Toll Gate House. The proximity of the two historic structures causes a slowdown in the two-way flow of traffic.
