1. The Old and the New Sculpture
The Smithsonian’s Art Inventories Catalog reports that “the [original] sculpture, a gift of Harry Black in 1926, was formerly in the collection of the City of Baltimore and was installed in the South Garden of Washington Place ... until 1961 when it was replaced by [this] larger version created by the artist’s son Henry Berge. Frederick R. Huber, Director of the Lyric Theatre and a good friend of Edward Berge, left money in his will for Henry Berge to enlarge his father’s piece and place the enlargement at Washington Place ... Edward Berge’s original piece was then moved to its current site, a pool near Johns Hopkins University Faculty Club.” The original bronze was approx. 4 feet high. This one is a little under 6½ feet high.
