Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany — Central Europe
The Leucorea University / Die Universität Leucorea
The Leucorea University attained European significance during the Reformation Movement. Martin Luther lectured here as a professor for biblical exegesis from 1512 onwards; Philipp Melanchthon was appointed in 1518.
An ecclesiastical institution was retained when the fundation closed in 1813; it was fused with the Prussian Frederick-University in Halle in 1817.
The "Alte Collegium" (i.e. old college built between 1503 and 1505) and the "Neue Collegium" (new college), better known as the Fridericianum (1509 to 1519) and located on the Collegien Street, date back to the university's foundation.
The old university campus was converted into barracks in 1842/43.
In 1994 the LEUCOREA Foundation was set up at the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
