1. Karr/Milburn House Marker

Inscription. Built in 1893, this house served the Karr and Milburn families for more than 90 years. Lucy Karr Milburn (1895-1998), was a lifelong champion of human rights, a high school teacher, and a poet. Before World War I she marched for women's suffrage with her mother, Minnie Schneider Karr. In the 1920's their home was state headquarters of the National Woman's Party. Lucy later chaired the Newark Interracial Council, helped found the Urban League Guild, and fought for racial integration at local hospitals and the YWCA.
