1. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Marker
Inscription. On July 9, 1793, at 3:00 P.M. there arrived in the port of Baltimore at Fells Point a ship, The Guineaman, carrying blacks, slave and free, from Santo Domingo. They were French speaking and Catholic. They formed a Eucharistic community that would become known at the time time the emancipation as the Parish of St. Francis Xavier - the first black Catholic parish in the United States of America.
