1. Westminster Marker
Inscription. County seat of Carroll County, founded 1764 first called Winchester for its founder William Winchester (1710-1790), who was born in Westminster, England (now a part of Greater London) Westminster Academy incorporated 1839 (later absorbed into the public school system) Western Maryland College chartered 1868.

Confederate forces under Major Harry Gilmor and General Bradley T. Johnson raided the town in 1864. Union forces to and from Gettysburg camped here.
