When Sheridan's Division moved towards Viniard's from this position, Lytle's Brigade was left to guard the bridge and the ford.
The 88th Illinois and 21st Michigan with two sections of the Battery were posted at the ford near the Mills. The 36th Illinois and 24th Wisconsin with the remaining section were placed on the higher ground to the left on the Chattanooga Road.
The position was felt by the enemy's skirmishers but not attacked.
At 3:30 A.M. of the 20th the Brigade moved north on the Chattanooga Road to Viniard's and thence with its Division to the high ground next west of Widow Glenn's.
