Location. 34° 55.258′ N, 85° 15.672′ W. Marker is near Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in Catoosa County. Marker is on Poe Road north of Lafayette Road, on the left when traveling south. This historical marker is located in the national park that preserves the site of the Chickamauga Battlefield, along the east side of the national park's battlefield tour roadway called Poe Road. More about this marker. This particular Georgia Unit Monument, is part of a line of Georgia Unit Monuments that runs perpendicular to the southern end of the Union line of Regimental Monuments that are situated north to south along the park's Poe Road.
According to the description information provided by the National Park Service, the monument is, “A rock-faced, peaked-top granite slab, 4'6" wide x 6' high x 1'8" thick, that carries an inscription, with crossed cannon barrels carved in relief above it. Marks unit's position on September 20, 1863, at 12:00 noon.”

1. My GG Grandfather
My GG grandfather was Charles I. Holland. He was comissioned by the federal government in 1898 to locate and place the marker for his battery at Chickamaga battlefield. He joined Massenburg's battery in May 1862 in Houston county GA. He was captured at Spanish Fort. On a few rosters I have seen he is listed as CJ Holland, which is not correct.

2. James Russell Day, Cannoneer in Massenburg's battery
My husband’s great great grandfather was James Russell Day—J. R. Day—captured in Mobile Alabama. From what I have found and deciphered that he fought in the Battle of Chickamauga and one other major battle. He is listed as a cannoneer.
