Inscription. While responding to a request to give the Last Rites to a dying man, Franciscan Father Reynaldo Rivera, rector at St. Francis Cathedral, was kidnapped and brutally murdered, sending Santa Fe and the entire state into shock. Ironically, Father Rivera was laid to rest on August 10th, the same date that the 21 Franciscan priests and friars lost their lives in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.

Also see . . .  PDF file of a Case Study Concerning Father Rivera’s Murder. “Why would someone whose grandfather had had a heart attack call a priest and not also call an ambulance? Why didn’t Rivera tell the caller to call an ambulance, and that he would meet him at the hospital? But priests say their first response to a request for anointing would be to rush to the scene without interrogating the caller.” (Submitted on August 16, 2014.)
