Born in Westmoreland County 28” April 1758.
Died in the City of New York 4“ July 1831.
By order of the General Assembly, his remains were removed to this cemetery 5” July 1858 as an evidence of the affection of Virginia for her good and honored son.
Erected 1858 by State of Virginia.

2. Marker in Hollywood Cemetery
James Monroe was originally buried in the churchyard of St. Marks in-the-Bowery in New York City. He was later reinterred in his home state of Virginia.

3. Presidents Circle in Hollywood Cemetery
Presidents Circle is so-named because Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler were laid to rest here. Monroe's grave is the "bird cage" in the foreground, while Tyler's is the obelisk in the background.
