1. Battle of Opelousas Historical Marker
Inscription. Here, on October 21, 1863, during the Great Texas Overland Expedition, Union troops under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks, forced Confederates, under Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor, to evacuate Opelousas and move his defensive line 7 miles north. 12 days later, Taylor reclaimed Opelousas and pushed Banks south, ending Banks' 1863 campaign to capture Texas.
