Inscription. The merry-go-round is the centerpiece of the park's colorful history. It was in 1904 that George Long Sr. brought his 12-year-old son George Jr. (inset) and the family to operate a carousel concession. This was one of several rides built and run by the extended Long family in Rochester and along thre East Coast at the turn of the century. The Longs spent several summers living in a shack right behind their carousel (large photo).
George Long Jr. (inset) loved Rochester and soon made the city his home. He bought the whole park in 1946 from the transit company and renamed it Dreamland for a time. Today, over half a century later, Long's grandchildren proudly carry on the task of operating the landmark amusement park - listed as the 4th oldest park in the country. The existing carousel was built by this fifth generation of the family, and keeps the "carousel tradition" alive.
