Inscription. Miss Amanda Garvin purchased this lot in 1870 and by 1872 had this small frame cottage built. She resided here until 1878. Herbert Hoover was familiar with this house and would have passed it often to and from school. The Garvin Cottage is considered to be a handsome example of Gothic Revival architecture as it developed in eastern Iowa in the 1870’s.
