During the August 15, 1775 meeting, the Committee of Observation decided to secure signatures from area residents who supported American independence, and to deal with those who refused to sign.

4. The Chevalier de Chastellux returns to Griffin’s Tavern.
Griffin’s Tavern was visited on November 20, 1780 by French Major General Francois-Jean de Beauvoir, Chevalier de Chastellux, 3rd in command of French Major General Jean-Baptistery Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau’s Army for the Expedition Particuliere sent by King Louis XVI to assist George Washington.
Chastellux mentions this visit and of speaking with Jacob Griffin in “Travels in North America in the years 1780,1781 and 1782.”

The Tavern was mostly destroyed in January 1995 by an electrical fire in the attic during restoration work.
