Historic Walnford. Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area. Richard Waln, a Quaker merchant from Philadelphia, purchased Walnford as a production source for his import/export business, and to establish an estate for his family. The mills and farm provided goods necessary for all during the American Revolution. Refusing to serve in the military or declare an oath in accordance with his Quaker beliefs, Richard Waln was expelled from the colony in 1777 by the Council of Safety. His family remained at Walnford to watch as a Hessian soldier lost a spur while fording Crosswicks Creek, and troops led by General Knyphausen, marched past on their way to the Battle of Monmouth. Richard Waln was allowed to return by the fall of 1778. Many years later a spur is found in the creek by son Nicholas, and the story of these events is on display with the spur at Walnford.
