In 1913 a furniture business was established by Watson Snyder at this location. In 1927 Alfred Dau purchased this site from Snyder. About 1940, Dau decided to move the Petoskey Housefurnishing Company to Bay View Road. In 1927, James A. Reid who was an officer in the Housefurnishing Company during the Snyder era opened his own business just up the street at 315 East Mitchell. James A. Reid sold not only fine furniture, but rugs, linoleum, draperies, stoves, ranges, and Philco radios from that location. When Dau moved the Housefurnishing Company from main street Petoskey, James A. Reid bought the 307 East Mitchell address. The business was passed on to his son, James M. Reid in the early 1950's. In the late 1980's, his son, James M. Reid Jr., continued the Reid tradition as a fine furniture retailer. In the early 2000's, his son James M. Reid III, became the fourth generation to run the business.
