1. Isabella County Courthouse and Jail Marker
Inscription. A few years after the construction of the Isabella County Courthouse, pictured in the background, the county jail was erected on the courthouse square. Sanborn Insurance maps for 1884 show the jail at this location. This potcard view, dating from 1908, has the camera pointed northwest from Court Street. The Sheriff's office and jail were to the left and his residence was to the right.

Citizens had various reasons to come to the jail. It was necessary to apply at the Sheriff's office to receive a Michigan Drivers License if you were a resident of Isabella County. This was in the years before the establishment of the branch office of the Secretary of State. In 1961 a new jail was built just north of the one pictured. When completed the old red brick jail was demolished. Later additions to the new 1961 jail extended southward so that the present jail completely covers the site on the postcard.
