Upon withdrawing from the ground of its morning fighting in consequence of the attack of Croxton's Union Brigade upon its left flank Liddell's Brigade took position on this line. At 3 o'clock the Brigade with Walthall's on its left advanced against the Union line on the high ground in its front. The brunt of the attack however fell on Walthall's portion of the line which gained the ridge in the immediate proximity of the Union line but after a brief
