Here stood one of the strongest units of the American river fortifications. It was strengthened by the water batteries along the river.

These key fortifications were instrumental in blocking the Road to Albany from Burgoyne's Army in 1777. Their presence forced Burgoyne to attack the American Main Line on Bemis Heights.
