1. Point Lookout Prisoner-Of-War Camp Marker
Inscription. After the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union established a prisoner-of-war depot near here. Confederate soldiers and Maryland civilians were imprisoned and guarded by 400 Union troops. With only tents for protection, 3,384 prisoners died.
 
Erected by the Maryland Historical Trust and the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Location. 38° 2.995′ N, 76° 19.426′ W. Marker is near Scotland, Maryland, in St. Mary's County. Marker is on Point Lookout Road (Route 5), on the left when traveling south. Marker is at the turnoff for the Fishing Pier. Marker may have been moved about 270 feet further south on same side. Google street view shows it in a different location in October 2008.
