Regarding Ashley County Court House. Before the county's first courthouse was erected, an eighteen by twenty-four foot public building was built on the southwest corner of the town square in 1849, at a cost of $200. It was a clerk's and sheriff's office. Most of the county's business was transacted there until the first courthouse was occupied. It seems probable that the marker is referring to this building. Although some court cases may have been tried there, it didn't have a designated courtroom nor adequate space for one, so calling it the first courthouse is a stretch.
