It is insightful to look at even one of the names on a memorial.
Pascual Ajualip Camaja was a 55 year old farmer and local Catholic leader. On July 18, 1982 he was kidnapped from his home in Caserio Chuachacalte, Cubulco by irregular Guatemala Army forces. In 1996 a witness mentioned in an interview that he had been tortured and killed. His remains were finally identified on February 27, 2004. REMHI and FAFG

Also see . . .  Guatemalan genocide at Wikipedia. The Guatemalan genocide refers to the massacre of Maya civilians during the Guatemalan military government's counterinsurgency operations. Massacres, forced disappearances, torture and summary executions of guerrillas and especially civilian collaborators at the hands of US-backed security forces had been widespread since 1965 and was a longstanding policy of the military regime, which US officials were aware of. A report from 1984 discussed "the murder of thousands by a military government that maintains its authority by terror." (Submitted on November 20, 2018, by J. Makali Bruton of Accra, Ghana.)
