1. Big Bone Lick Marker

Inscription. Discovered in 1739, by the French Capt. Charles Lemoyne de Longueil this famous saline- sulphur spring was frequented for thousands of years byIndians and vast herds of buffalo, deer and other animals. The first English explorers found here scattered over the lick countless bones and teeth of the extinct Pleistocene elephants, the mammoth and the mastodon.

Erected 1938 by Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. (Marker Number 32.)

Location. 38° 53.273′ N, 84° 45.044′ W. Marker is near Union, Kentucky, in Boone County. Marker can be reached from Beaver Road (Kentucky Route 338) west of U.S. 127. marker is in the picnic area near the entrance of Big Bone Lick State Park, off St Rt 338, about two miles west of US 127. Enter park off St Rt 338, first drive to right leads to the picnic area. There are two markers at the shelter house; this one, and “Mary Engles”.
