Additional Description:
Eleventh Site on the Historical Sites of Abbeville Tour
The present form of the area was laid out in 1919 when the streets were bricked, and the Confederate Monument was erected in 1906 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The monument you see today was unveiled in 1996 and is an exact replica of the original which was damaged by fire in December of 1991, caused by a huge Christmas tree that was once placed around the monument. The pink granite fountain was a watering trough for horses, mules and oxen and was placed by the Animal Welfare League in 1910. The old iron bell on the north and originally hung on City Hall and announced important events of the time.
