Additional Description: Hampton was guarding the Central Railroad in the vicinity of Green Springs from Federal cavalry under General Philip Sheridan. Sheridan had struck out from Cold Harbor, Virginia earlier with the intention of destroying the Central Virginia and connections between Richmond and Charlottesville.
