Additional Description: Crystal Eastman grew up surrounded by socialist family and friends. She became a pioneer investigative journalist who started a career investigating labor conditions for the Pittsburgh Survey sponsored by the Russell Sage Foundation. Her report, Work Accidents and the Law (1910), became a classic study and helped advocate the first workers compensation law in America. Library of Congress
