Additional Description: In 1831, twenty-five-year-old engineer John A. Roebling and his brother Carl led a group of German immigrants to Pennsylvania, to escape religious and political persecution in their homeland. The Roeblings settled near Pittsburgh in a colony initially called Germania, but later renamed Saxonburg. There Roebling created the world's first wire rope, first employed by the Allegheny Portage Railroad in 1841. Courtesy of the Pennsylvania State Archives
