Caption: Missouri State Guard troops rolled hemp bales up this hill as they approached the trenches.
Additional Description: Union trenches are still visible near the tree line. The Missouri State Guard soldiers rolled hemp bales up this hill as a moving breastworks as they gradually moved towards the Federal troops within the trenches. Most of the trees that are shown in this picture would not have been present on the day of the battle.
