Caption: Marker in Fort Lee Historic Park
Additional Description: George Washington's army was camped at this location in 1776. On November, Washington abandoned Fort Lee when he learned that Gen. Cornwallis and the British army had entered New Jersey and were heading for Fort Lee. This was the start of Washington's retreat across New Jersey.
