1830 ------1837 | Additional Description: This monument was not only a symbol of national pride, but a great feat of engineering. The first commercial railway in America was built to transport granite from the quarries in Quincy, Massachusetts. A Boston ship rigger built a special hoisting apparatus to lift the five-ton blocks into place.
