Caption: Sign with 1890 Photograph
Additional Description: At the right end of the building’s front is this sign, including a photograph taken in the last year of van Gogh’s life. It reads: “On May 20th 1890, Vincent van Gogh arrives at Auvers-sur-Oise. He moves into the Ravoux Inn where his daily board costs 3.50 francs per day. On this picture taken the same year, Adeline, the innkeeper’s daughter (13 years old), is standing in front of the door. Van Gogh paints her portrait three times. In 1954, she recalls Van Gogh’s stay: At home we all respected him. We used to call him familiarly ‘Monsieur Vincent’ (. . .) He would return towards midday for lunch. (. . .) The menu was made up of all that was served in restaurants at the time: meat, vegetables, salad and dessert. He never returned a dish. He was most accommodating.”

On l'appelait familièrement "Monsieur Vincent" (...)
