Ice Harvesting at Boca: After the pond was cleared of snow, a horse drawn scratcher, similar to a plow, cut the initial 3 foot by 3 foot blocks in a grid pattern. The blocks were then cut with an ice saw. An ice block 12 inches thick would weigh well over 200 pounds! Using long pike poles, workers floated the blocks to a loading area. The blocks were then moved to an ice house where they were stacked and insulated with sawdust.
