Battery Reed Marker
Photographer: Bill Coughlin
Taken: August 6, 2013
Caption: Battery Reed Marker
Additional Description: During the June 16, 1862 Battle of Secessionville, a Confederate battery consisting of 2 24-pounders was located at this position. Lt. Col. Ellison Capers of the 27th So. Carolina, an 1857 graduate of the Citadel, took over the guns when he discovered them manned by soldiers with no artillery training. One gun became unserviceable after a single shot, but the remaining gun checked the Union advance.
