Additional Description: The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still in use today. Created in 1782 by George Washington to recognize "unusual gallantry, extraordinary fidelity and essential service," it was reintroduced in 1932 for members of the Armed Forces who are wounded or killed in action.
