Additional Description: Marker is at the site of Fort Billings, which was built to protect Philadelphia from an approach by the British Navy. After holding off them for a month in 1777, the British were able to land 500 men just downriver from the fort. Leary and Barney oversaw the evacuation and burning of the fort before the British arrived.
