Additional Description: Opening up the West The Army was directed to protect the crews of private firms building the railroads and canals which opened up the West. Often the Army supplied the labor of enlisted men and Indians to the private efforts. The railroad allowed Northwest products to reach populated markets in the East and carried new settlers to the West.
