Additional Description:
is a designated National Historic Site and a Registered Provincial Heritage Property. The first burial was the day after Halifax was founded, June 22, 1749. This land was outside the stockade which ran up Spring Garden Road. The last burial was 1844 and at the time there were over 10,000 burials but about only 1250 gravemarkers have survived. In 1793 the burying ground was deeded to St. Paul’s Church three blocks north on Barrington St. St. Paul was erected in 1749 and opened for worship in 1750, it is also open to the public.
In 1987 the Old Burying Ground Foundation was established as a registered non-profit foundation to restore and preserve the cemetery. The first restoration was completed in 1991. Another restoration commenced in 2010 to repair damage caused by 20 years of weather and Hurricane Jaun.
The Old Burying Ground Foundation relies upon voluntary contributions for about 50% of our funding necessary to maintain these premises.
