The Carnegie
Photographer: Brandon Fletcher
Taken: June 4, 2013
Caption: The Carnegie's Cottage
Additional Description: 'The humble home of honest poverty' Andrew Carnegie was born in one of the upstairs rooms of this cottage on the stormy night of 25 November 1835. Although some of the furnishings are from a later period, the layout of the cottage shows how these houses served as home and workplaces for handloom weavers like the Carnegie's. They shared the space with another family, each having two handlooms on the ground floor and one all-purpose room above. Many such houses were built when hand-weaving was flourishing in the 18th century. By the mid-19th century it was a different story: epidemics, steam-powered looms and depressed markets meant that life in Dumfermline was a struggle.
